Heinrich von Ferstel - Austria
University of Applied Arts
Stubenring 3, Vienna
1875

For his University of Applied Arts, Heinrich von Ferstel designed a brick building in the style of Italien renaissance.
The three story construction raises over a rectangular plan with two courtyards. The middle section between the two courtyards
is occupied by the stairwell. The rooms a layed out as an exterior circulation with a closed system of corridors.
This art school became famous around the turn of the century through the teachers Josef Hoffmann and Alfred Roller.
After the second World War this school was shaped by persons as Oswald Haerdtl, Oswald Oberhuber, Hans Hollein, Wilhelm Holzbaer
and Coop Himmelb(l)au. From 1960 to 1965 the University of Applied Arts was enlarged with additions by Karl Schwanzer and Eugen Wörle.
An interessting and radical reorganization of the roof spaces is the consequence of a competition in 1999, which was won by Falkeis & Falkeis.
