Jean Nouvel - France
Musée du Quai Branly - Paris
Quay Branly 37, Paris
2006

The Musée du quai Branly in Paris promotes the indigenous art and cultures of Africa, Asia, Oceania and America, both in permanent and temporary exhibitions.
This Museum opened in 2006 and is administered jointly by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
It serves not only as a museum, but also as a centre for research. The Name of the museum origins from the bank of the river Seine at that location, which is named
in honor of the French scientist Eduouard Branly. This Museum follows the tradition of French presidents building museums as monuments of their time in office.
With the
Musée du quai Branly President Jacques Chirac follows the example of his predecessors, so the Centre George Pompidou was launched by President Georges Pompidou,
the Musée d'Orsay is the is the result of the presidential time of
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and the Grand Louvre is related to François Miterrand.

For the new museum was selected a site covering an area of 25'000 square meters, which was occupied by serveral buildings. This site was intended for one of
the grand prjects of president François Miterrand. This project for an international conference center had to be abandoned as a consequence of intense opposition
from residets of the neighborhood. In 1999 an international design competiton was held, which was won by the French architect Jean Nouvel. The criticisme of
the neighbors on the blocked project was taken into account by Jean Nouvel in his project. The building of the new museum was designed to have as little impact
as possible. The main building follows the curve of the river Seine and
appears lower than the neighbouring buildings. It is largely screend from views by the surrounding
garden, while the administrative buildings are constructed to harmonize with the nearby buildings of the Haussmann-period. In 2001 the construction of the new museum started.
The building was completed in 2005 and the Musée du quai Branly opened on June 23 2006.
