Astoria Office Building
Keizersgracht 174-176, Amsterdam

1904 - 1905

The Astoria office building was built in 1904 - 1905 according to a design by Gerrit van Arkel for the first Dutch life insurance bank. This spacious building on the Keizersgracht replaced three older canal houses. Gerrit van Arkel designed the seven-storey building in a somewhat chunky Art Nouveau style. With a height of 37 metres, the building is considered one of Amsterdam's first office towers. For a long time, the building was not particularly well regarded. Until 1963, it was maligned as an "architectural monstrosity". Characteristic elements are the detailed entrance made of gilded bricks and the tiling in the tower. The Astoria office building was enlarged on both sides in the late 1960s in the same style, creating a mediating transition between the tall side walls and the less tall neighbouring canal houses.
