Le Garage des Nations

The
Garage des Nations in Geneva was built between 1935 and 1936
according to a design by the architect Maurice
Braillard. The modernist building is located at the
intersection of Avenue de France and Rue de Montbrillant. The
design stands out due to its streamlined shape. The
wedge-shaped volume is very slim at the intersection and
thickens towards the back. At the top, the strong canopy seems
to be cantilevered, and at the rear it connects with a solid
and cubic body. The seemingly cantilevered canopy lies on a
glass cylinder. The shape of the building as well as the
actual dimensions are determined by the needs of circulation
of the vehicles. Due to its prominent location and striking
design, the Garage des Nations became a local architectural
icon.
Die
Garage des Nations in Genf entstand in den Jahren 1935 bis
1936 nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Maurice
Braillard. Das modernistische Gebäude befindet
sich an der Kreuzung der Avenue de France und der Rue de
Montbrillant. Der Entwurf fällt durch seine stromlinienförmige
Gestalt auf. Das keilförmige Volumen zeigt sich zur
Strassenreuzung sehr schlank und verdickt sich zur Rückseite.
An der Spitze scheint das kräftige Vordach weit auszukragen,
und verbindet sich im rückwärtigen Bereich mit einem massiven
und kubischen Körper. Das scheinbar auskragende Vordach liegt
auf einem gläsernen Zylinder. Die Gebäudeform wie auch die
tatsächlichen Dimensionen werden aus der Zirkulation der
Fahrzeuge bestimmt. Aufgrund der prominenten Lage und der
markanten Gestaltung, wurde die Garage des Nations zu einer
lokalen Architekturikone.
