Peter Zumthor - Switzerland
Twin House Räth
Palu 18, Haldenstein
1981 - 1983

The twin house Räth in Haldenstein is one of the early works of the famous Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. With this design, Peter Zumthor won an award for good buildings in Grisons in 1987. The building is located at the end of an alleyway (Süsswinkel / Palu), and stands against the backdrop of the steeply sloping and wooded slope. Located directly on the topograhic edge of the terrain, the building overlooks a lower plain and the nearby river Rhine. In contrast to the neighboring Dierauer house, which was created around 8 years earlier and features rather traditional forms, the house Räth shows distinctive classic motifs. Arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard with an outbuilding in front of it, this austere building is reminiscent of classic atrium villas. Arcades on the ground floor, two-storey loggias in front of the narrow building fronts belong to this formal canon as well as the repeated arrangement of square windows. The use of reddish brick and roof tiles on the gentle sloping roofs give the twin house a highly unified character and a calm appearance.
