Otto Wagner - Austria
Metropolitan Railway Station Karlsplatz
Karlsplatz - Vienna
1899

The Metropolitan Railway Station Karlsplatz was inaugurated in 1899 and was originally named "Akademiestrasse".
This Station is an architectural exception in the network of the Vienna Metropolitan Railway System.
At time of its conception, the Station was open to the sky and consisted of the two buildings above ground.
The two opposing pavillions were richly decorated with ornamentation. The decoration was executed in Art Nouveau style,
what was considered very modern at time of construction. The floral ornaments were created by Joseph Maria Olbrich.
In contrast to other stations, it was constructed by Otto Wagner as a steel framework with marble cladding.
