Adalberto Libera - Italy

Adalberto Libera (July 16, 1903 - March 17, 1963) is one of the most important representatives of Italian Modernism, besides Giuseppe Terragni. Like Giuseppe Terragni, Adalberto Libera is also attributed to the famous Italian rationalism. As early as 1927, still during his studies in Parma and Rome, he joined Gruppo 7 and in 1930 he became the secretary of this group of architects. Henceforth the grouping was named M.I.A.R. (Movimento Italiano di Architettura Razionale), which means "Italian movement for rational architecture". Adalberto Libera was close to the Fascist Party of Italy and from 1932 on he was an artistic adviser to the Fascist Party. During the period of fascism, Adalberto Libera mainly built functional buildings. Together with Mario de Renzi, Adalberto Libera was responsible for the design of an official exhibition, which marked the tenth anniversary of the fascist coming into power. The Italian pavilions at the World Exposition in Chicago (1933) and Brussels (1935) were also the result of the collaboration with Mario de Renzi. Another important project by Adalberto Libera is the Congress Palace for the planned world exhibition E42 in Rome. After the fall of Italian fascism, Adalberto Libera became mainly involved in social housing. The Casa Malaparte on the island of Capri is the most famous building by Adalberto Libera. However, this was created under the extensive influence of the writer Curzio Malaparte. Through the film "The Contempt" by Jean-Luc Godard, the Casa Malaparte became also known to the general public.
