Eduardo Souto de Moura - Portugal
Apartment Building
Praça de Liège 104, Porto
1994 - 2001

This apartment building, designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura, is conceived as a strict geometric solid clad with clear stone on the north and south sides,
while the remaining sides are fully glazed and marked by the horizontal and vertical structural elements horizontal and vertical.
The east and west orientations
in the order
of the openings, clearly reveal the privileged relationship with the wooded square and the interior garden. The accesses are concentrated on the south side
with a clear differentiation of the pedestrian system opposed to the automobile traffic. The three apartments, one per floor, are served by a staircase, carefully studied
to minimize the common area, and an elevator with direct access to the garage. A covered terrace fronting the square extends the living area to the exterior,
allowing a total continuity between the various spaces of the day area, and establishing an interesting relationship to the exterior through the transparency
of the glazed openings. Slender guardrails in stainless steel nullify themself in front of the big sliding windows with frames and shutters made in wood.
The careful designed and executed details and the geometric rigor of the composition clearly identify and characterize the author.
