Aurelio Galfetti - Switzerland

Born in April 1936, Aurelio Galfetti is considered one of the main exponents of modern Ticino architecture alongside Mario Botta, Luigi Snozzi, Tita Carloni and Livio Vacchini. After working in the architecture office of Tita Carloni in Lugano, Aurelio Galfetti decided to study architecture. He studied from 1956 to 1960 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich with Paul Waltenspühl. After completing his studies, he opened his own architectural office in Lugano. During the first years of his professional activity he built the Casa Rotalinti above Bellinzona, a radical concrete building considered as a percursor to the new Ticino architecture. The harsh architectural language contrasts with the surrounding eclectic country houses. Between 1962 and 1970 Aurelio Galfetti worked in an office community with Ivo Trümpy and Flora Ruchat. Later he collaborated on various projects with Rino Tami, Luigi Snozzi, Mario Botta and Livio Vacchini. Over a period of ten years, between 1981 and 1991, Aurelio Galfetti worked on the restoration of Castelgrande in Bellinzona. His architectural interventions created a gentle juxtaposition of old and new. Through this work, Aurelio Galfetti established himself in wide circles. In 1984, Aurelio Galfetti accepted a visiting professorship at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, and in 1987 he also taught in Paris. In 1996, together with his colleague Mario Botta, he founded the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. From 1996 to 2001 he was director of this school and until 2006 he taught there as a professor.
