Hermann Herter - Switzerland
Tramdepot Kalkbreite
Elisabethenstrasse 27, Zürich
1939 - 1949

The complete new planning, including the new railway lines and roads in the Enge, Aussersihl and Wiedikon districts of the city Zurich,
were desinged by the then municipal architect Hermann Herter. He also designed the accompanying public buildings and the necessary service buildings.
With the Tramdepot in Wiedikon, the massive architecture of the station and the related infrastructure buildings are complemented by the transparent structure of a glass hall.
The contrary elements of a heavy retaining wall made of cut stones and the light weight construction on top of it contrast with each other. The appearance of the tram depot
is strongly marked by the rhythm of the roof structure, resutling in large rectangular skylights, further improving the exposure to light of the interior space.
