Peter Märkli - Switzerland
Hotel Management School Belvoirpark
Seestrasse 141, Zürich
2014

The construction of the Hotel Management School Belvoirpark in Zurich Wollishofen, designed by Peter Märkli, was completed in October 2014. The architect himself stressed that the setting of the volume in urban terms was more crucial for the design of this project than the formulation of the interior. The five-storey building is located in a significant landscape garden within the city of Zurich, bordering the heavy traffic Seestrasse. Facing the street the Hotel School appears as a three-storey volume, while towards the park the two lowest floors are layed out as a pedestal. With the slightly bent facade, the building follows the hillside and blends surprisingly well into the parklandscape. According to Peter Märkli, the discreet façade is reminiscent of the villa architecture of the neighborhood.
The new building of the Hotel School Belvoirpark houses training facilities with school and conference rooms, two restaurants and two hotel rooms of different standards. On the inside the architect Peter Märkli tried to avoid the narrow corridors known of school buildings and instead designed spacious halls, which provide access to the individual seminar and classrooms. With a ceiling height of 4 meters, these rooms result in an extraordinary generosity, and look more like a luxury hotel than a school. Noble materials and rugs on the floor further emphasize this impression. In the vertical, the circulation in the building is made by two staircases. One of them representative, centrally located and with a flat slope, the other as an escape stairwell, but no less generous. The two stairwells were required due to fire protection reasons, so that the mentioned halls were allowed to be furnished.
