Luigi Snozzi - Switzerland

After completing his studies (1952-1957) and graduation from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Luigi Snozzi (born 29.07.1932) worked on internships with
the Ticino architects Peppo Brivio  and Rino Tami. In 1958 Luigi Snozzi began to work on his own as an architect with the opening of his own office in Locarno.
At this time modern architecture was still largely exotic in the canton Ticino. At the ETH Zurich Luigi Snozzi had studied together with his equally famous colleagues
Livio Vacchini and Aurelio Galfetti. They shared a common interest into the modernist architecture, relating their own work to the masters of modernism.
From 1962 to 1971 Luigi Snozzi collaborated on several designs and competition proposals together with Livio Vacchini together. During the years 1973 - 1975
Luigi Snozzi was a guest lecturer for architectural design at ETH Zurich. From 1975-1988 Luigi Snozzi maintained a second office in Zurich together with his office partner Bruno Jenni.
In 1985, ten years after his visiting professorship in Zurich, Luigi Snozzi eventually became a full professor at the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale) of Lausanne, where he taught until 1997.
For two years, from 1986 to 1988, Luigi Snozzi was president of the advisory design board of the city of Salzburg. In 1988 Luig Snozzi opened a second office in Lausanne.

With the 1975 exhibition "Tendencies - New Architecture in Ticino"  in Zurich, the central position of Luigi Snozzi in the Ticino School of Architecture was presented to the public for the first time.
From that time on, his influence on the younger generation of architects in Switzerland is increasing - and can hardly be overestimated until know.
For Luig Snozzi the work of the modernist architects is a constant reference point, but he never adapts something uncritically.
Luigi Snozzi has no intention to break with the past, instead he understands the history as an impulse for the new.
One of his credos is: "Architecture must not invent, one has to rediscover her only."

Beyond stereotypes and against strong resistance Luigi Snozzi, who is also politically active and is a "avowed socialist" in his own eyes, got the opportunity to realize his vision
of a new interpretation of small-scale-urban life in the impressive example of the revitalization of the village of Monte Carasso (since 1977). He transformed Monte Carasso into
a place of identification. Before he had started with his extremely important work, Monte Carasso was considered to be a fragmented settlement robbed of its structures.
Luigi Snozzi's architecture is never intrusive fashionable but always restrained and the purpose oriented, but always full of poetry.

Luigi Snozzi's buildings, often realized in exposed concrete, are not autonomous objects but always strive for a relationship with the city.
The precise "reading the location" is the origin of the architecture developed by Luigi Snozzi.
In his aphorisms he emphasized insistently the importance of the dialogue between individual buildings and city.
"I love the city," admits Luigi Snozzi and adds: "Every architectural intervention requires a destruction: Destroy with mind!"

During his long career, Luigi Snozzi won several competitions. He was invited for numerous competitions in Switzerland and abroad.
In contrast, his realized oeuvre is much smaller and consists, with some exceptions, mainly of single family houses.
